Ovulation Process:
- Ovulation involves the release of mature eggs from the ovarian follicles.
- Typically occurs around 14 days before the start of the next menstrual period.
Fertile Phase:
- Days 10-18 of the menstrual cycle are usually the most fertile.
- Fertilization can happen 12-24 hours after the egg’s release during the luteal phase.
Conception Timing:
- Regular intercourse five days before and on the day of ovulation increases conception chances.
- Sperm can survive inside the female body for up to five days.
- If fertilized, the egg implants in the uterus 6-12 days later; otherwise, menstruation occurs.
Ovulation Prediction Methods
1. Tracking Menstrual Cycles:
- Useful for women with regular menstrual cycles.
- The first day of menstrual bleeding is considered day one of the cycle.
- Keeping a menstrual calendar helps in tracking and predicting ovulation.
2. Tracking Basal Body Temperatures (BBT):
- BBT is measured first thing in the morning with a special thermometer.
- A slight rise in BBT indicates ovulation.
- Must be tracked over several months for accuracy.
- Factors like illness can affect BBT readings.
3. Ovulation Kits:
- These kits test for a surge in hormones like luteinizing hormone (LH) before ovulation.
- LH-based tests are 99% accurate in detecting hormone surge but don’t pinpoint the exact time of ovulation.
- Other kits measure estrogen levels in saliva or salt in sweat, which can predict ovulation earlier than LH tests but require more preparation and baseline tracking.
